These five larger-than-average sandpipers had long stocky bodies compared to their short legs and had the very distinguishing long extremely downcurved bills. Body and bill of each were not as large and long as a Long-billed Curlew. Distinguished from Godwits by the downcurved bill. We had arrived after the birds flew off some distance to the tip of Ellis Island, so we did not get wonderful close views, but this being only our second time seeing Whimbrels, we were happy with the long-distance views.
