A handsome adult male showing broad scapulars. First year birds have narrower, more pointed scapulars. The fine vermiculated herring-bone pattern of gray shows only at close range. A rare but regular winter visitor to California, they are almost invariably found by searching through large flocks of American Wigeon. Now moved from the genus "Anas" to "Mareca" to prevent polyphyly in "Anas".
