Large heavy bodied jays with a long dark crest, blackish chest, head, and back; bluish belly, wing panel, and tail. A short white segment orchard above the eye and less noticeable white frontal streaks on the crest added subtle accents to otherwise featureless dark head and face. They moved inconspicuously through the interior of the forest blocks, rarely and then only briefly perching near the roadside trees. Their harsh “shack, shack, shack” calls alerted us to their presence several times. We never saw more than two simultaneously, but on one occasion we heard one calling from the opposite side of the road from where we had tracked two others (but now out of sight), and felt it unlikely that one of these had returned back across without being detected. Initial detection at about 10 AM at 33.7100667, -114.4974776, as one, then another flew across the road between the 2nd and 3rd forest blocks from the north end of the forest. A wooden plank “bridges” the canal near this location. Subsequently we had multiple brief encounters, vocal or visual, in both blocks to the north, meaning all our sighting were in the there northern forest blocks.
