*rare but very rapidly changing in status as anthropogenic climate change pushes them further and further north. Like other southern wetland species following the same pattern, they seem apt to increase in leaps and bounds, with today being at least a bound. At 7:29, 25 minutes after Michael and Chelsea had four juvenile white ibis over Brooklyn, one zipped by at mid height over the surf heading southwest towards Midland Beach. Around 7:45 another one came in high from the east, circled over the bay, then doubled back and landed on the exposed rocks where it foraged for quite a while, then relocated to the rock pool nearest the jetty where it lay waste to a few crabs. At 8pm it took off and flew erratically southwest over the beach, faking towards the islands then coming back in to circle the Ocean Avenue pilings, eventually cutting sharply inland towards New Creek. Based on direction of travel, these birds may have flown from Brooklyn. Serendipitous but Fort Wadsworth would be the spot, as it has been a weirdly effective southern bird portal for me over the last couple of years. Photos of both
