Arrived a little later tonight, did not see the bird in the tree cavity, but found him on the same tree as last night. He sat here again for a couple minutes, spit a pellet, and preened, before flying across the trail to a branch that had fallen but was sticking out of the ground about 4 feet high. This spot was only about 10 feet away from the Hackberry. He was just in. Here, here again, sat for a few before jumping to the ground to a small branch about 4 inches from the ground. I laid down to try and photograph him. Then he jumped from this small branch onto some prey, happened too quick for me to realize what was going on, until he flew back up to the larger branch, and began tearing up and eating the prey for a few minutes before leaving half fit, and flying off. A few minutes later, I found them again across the trail in a tree close to the Hackberry he hangs out in - he was doing his distinct trill. After he flew from this tree, I left. This is probably one of the coolest experiences I’ve had with this bird.
