Our most common, suburban adapted, woodpecker. Possibly not the most common in the historic landscape, but definitely the best adapted to the current landscape. The red on the head is restricted to the nape on females and crown to nape on males. Immature birds lack red on the head. The red on the belly is scant and often covered as the birds are pressed against a tree. Males have more red than females.
