Photographed. 1 x 1st cycle/1st winter individual with mostly juvenile plumage. Pale version. Uniform coloring with near body colored primaries with expected Venetian blind pattern. Mostly dark bill with some pink at the base. Quite large with a longer bill. Presumed male. Close to size of AHGU but not quite larger. Ruled out Kumlien’s due to contrasting dark tail, and size of bill. So large and pale that I also ruled out GWGU. Bill long but not overall large. Coloring not “muted” like others I reviewed. Primary coverts have white outline. I did not notice this in GWGU photos reviewed. Ruled out GLGU due to slender shape, smaller head and lack of bi-colored bill. Wings also seemed long. 1 x 2nd cycle darker version. Smaller. Possibly a female. Primaries were lighter than nearby AHGU and white chevrons were present at the ends. Did not appear to be worn/faded like some AHGU in the spring. Venetian blind pattern present in the primaries. Legs are closer to purple than pink. Some grey scapulars present. All dark bill. Tail band was a lighter color like the primaries. Primaries and tail too dark for Kumliens. Both individuals showed silvery white primaries on the underside with dark restricted to the tips on the smaller individual and no dark showing on the other.
