I heard it very close to the road about 50 meters from the hunter's gate. I played Merlin one call, at very low volume, to make sure I was correct with the ID, and the bird walked out of the marsh and stood at the side of the road 3 meters from my car. I'm wondering if the first American Bittern call on Merlin is a female because the bird I saw certainly acted like he thought he was about to find a date.
