**very rare; I searched out this calling bird because it sounded like a BHGR: compared to RBGR (which I listened to just yesterday) the calls were flatter, more hollow sounding. The oft-cited comparison to DOWO is apt, and I learned this analogy from Dick Veit before the Sibley Guide was published, popularizing it. Finding the bird perched about 7 m up in leafless branches, I was thrilled to see that it looked like a BHGR too! I noted a female type Pheucticus (oriole-sized, massive bill, two white wingbars, bold PUFI-like head pattern) with very fine dark streaks confined to the flanks and not extending onto the breast. The underparts were buffy. The color did not appear as intense as is often depicted for BHGR, but this might have been due to my views of the bird against a gray sky. The upper mandible was noticeably darker than the lower. I missed good views of it as it flew because I tried for a recording with my phone. This did pick up two calls which, despite the poor quality, might support the identification. I know the calls of both species well and saw the unstreaked breast. The bird was found in the trees to the west of the path along the west side of the pond. The bird flew to the northeast but was immediately lost behind a large cypress that blocked my view. I searched for it in the small stand of trees along the northeast shore of the pond (a favorable area for migrants and where I observed a RBGR yesterday) but did not find any grosbeaks there.
