觀察細節
Much more detectable than yesterday afternoon in this same area, where we had only 4 individuals. There was also much more song given this morning compared to yesterday morning, when calls were definitely the dominant vocalization type. 1-5 notes given for their song, but typically 4-5 hollow “tuk” notes on the same pitch. One variant sound-recorded. The first bird was heard singing constantly at some distance around sun-up: a consistent “chunk, chunk, chunk, chunk, chunk … “ (which sounds a lot like one of the phrases of a Rusty-breasted Whistler, but it just never strays from that theme): (-6.8679132, 115.3513887). At this point, we were in a teak plantation, but the bird might have been in decent, adjacent forest. +2 here: (-6.8670487, 115.3522882) Habitat photo #1 today. This is an open teak plantation with a shrubby understory that seems to consist predominantly of two plants: something that looks reminiscent of a hop hornbeam (iNaturalist was not confident enough to suggest an ID) and a thorny acacia-like plant (according to iNaturalist, apparently some kind of peackock flower [subfamily Caesalpinioideae]). This area has also been used as grazing land for cattle, as I could see three cows from this vantage. I think this was the “worst”, most degraded habitat that we’ve detected them in thus far. I could also hear another bird singing farther up the road (to the east), perhaps the male from the next pair (?). +2 Another distant bird heard singing farther up the road from here, countersinging with this presumed male and a chattering (presumed) female: (-6.8666849, 115.3541121) Habitat shot #2. Not quite in good habitat yet but right on the forest edge. +3 (2+1) here: (-6.8666210, 115.3551602) I believe three consecutive males were audible from this one point, plus another chattery bird. This makes 4 territories between roughly this set of coordinates and the second set with the first habitat shot (I’ll have to generate the distance between these points later.) UPDATE: This distance = 320.9 m or roughly 107 m between each successive territory. +2 here (one songster and another chattery individual) at 7:25 a.m.: (-6.8681295, 115.3591547) I saw one of these birds with a giant caterpillar, which I photographed poorly. Habitat shot #3. +1 here: (-6.8665800, 115.3587805). +2 here, in proper forest: (-6.8653471, 115.3591999). Habitat shot #4. +3 (2+1) in forest here: (-6.8642609, 115.3594591). +2 more singing birds from here: (-6.8631295, 115.3590973). Still singing regularly, on their own accord, at ~8:30 a.m. Today, I only noted birds as singles or pairs, although I didn’t see most of the birds that we detected today. = 18 individuals
