NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut #1 Mixed Colony. Bulk reel: 88 [The data that follows pertains to both catalog numbers 60725 and 60726, a recording that was split up to create these two specimens. 3Sep2009. DAM] 0630: Song by male angustifrons in focus and male decumanus out of focus. Then some alarm calls caused practiclly all the oropendulas and other birds in the tree to take off suddenly. 0655: Then birds return; calls of both spp. were heard (birds apparently uneasy about my presence, especially the decumanus). Then song by male angustifrons. Song by decumanus; the male angustifrons then left. The decumanus then leaves. Male anugustfrons is back: song (I'm now in a different position which disturbs birds a little here). Then the male decumanus is heard to arrive; besides the flight sound, one hears a "hiss" given by this bird. The male angustifrons leaves and male decumanus sings, then leaves. {decumanus male uses pronounced wing rattling as part of its display. Angustifrons male does not use wing rattling.} 0755: Now both males are present and sing; the male angustifrons song is different from previous and during the course of this session he changes the pattern again. Also during this time the male decumanus left, then returned again but was silent most of the time (sang once, not recorded) and then left again. 0800: Male decumanus sings. (Song by Platycichla flavipes male who accompanies his mate building nest.) After some silence the male flew from a branch to the side of a nest (apparently saw the, or a, female approaching) and produced the "hissing" noise, preceeded by some mild wing rattling, but not followed by song. A bit later he sings. Then he left, then came back with a female; the succeeding song is different. {the decumanus male pays no attention to arriving angustifrons females} Calls by decumanus then song: note the song phrases are quietly repeated and also are of different kinds. {This resulted when two female decumanus arrived together} Again the male decumanus gives the "hissing" sound (apparently preceeded by mild wing rattle, although I could not see any wing movement); this seems to be produced from the lungs. Also songs heard and then another "hiss" display. Then more song of male sitting next to a female who has nest material but won't go to the nest. 0835: Some excited calls, motive or reason undertermined.
