Barn Swallows nesting symbiotically under an active Osprey nest.
觀察細節
One nest of Barn Swallows with young being fed underneath the active Osprey platform, which is made of wood. On my last visit on 11 June 2023, there was a different nest of young Barn Swallows being fed. See checklist https://ebird.org/checklist/S141273397. This is a form of symbiosis known as "mutualism", where both species benefit by the arrangement. There are four main symbiotic relationships: mutualism, commensalism, parasitism, and competition. “Mutualism” is a symbiotic relationship in which both organisms benefit, whereas “commensalism” is a symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits and the other is neither helped nor harmed. I argue that the symbiotic relationship in this Osprey/Barn Swallow nesting association is “mutualism”, since both species probably benefit. How? The Barn Swallow benefits by having a large, predatory bird nesting nearby offering protection from smaller predatory birds and mammals since the Osprey would mob and chase away all such diurnal predators. And the Osprey benefits by having the feisty and aggressive swallows keeping an eye out for such predators and joining in on any potential mobbing action. This is NOT new to science. From the Dailybirder.com: “Barn swallows also have a good working relationship with osprey, a species of bird that dines exclusively on fish and is therefore not a threat. Swallows will often build their nests directly below the larger osprey nests, substituting those nests for the overhangs provided in human-made settings. These bigger birds provide protection to barn swallows from other birds of prey, and all the swallows have to do is scream for help.” And from www.abcbirds.com: “In an interesting symbiosis, Barn Swallows sometimes nest just below Osprey nests. As the Osprey defends its own nest and young from predators, it also provides protection for the swallows. In turn, the Barn Swallow's high-pitched, twittering alarm calls likely alert the Osprey to intruders.”
