Rutger: A lifer, observed thanks to David Belmonte who called me while observing the bird. It is a very rare species in Lima: this is only the second record on eBird, the previous one being of April 17th 2022 in Cieneguila. The observed individual was a male in alternate plumage, with a solid black cap, white cheeks, white throat, pure white underparts and a thick, black moustachial streak, characteristics that were seen at short range when it was foraging in a middle-sized tree along the street. I managed get some photos, but the quality is poor, because the my camera is slow and the bird was moving quickly through the canopy. The only other black-and-white warbler that is known to occur in Peru is Mniotilta varia (Black-and-white Warbler), but the photos of the observed individual show various characteristics that clearly exclude this species: 1) It has a solid black cap with white throat and cheeks, separated by a thick, black moustachial streak (M. varia has either a black throat or a white throat with no moustachial streak). 2) It has orange feet and tarsi, not black, and a yellowish orange mandible with a black tip. 3) It has a pure white vent without black tips to the feathers. 4) It has yellowish green borders to the primaries, not white. Furthermore, M. varia is very rare everywhere in Peru, with a few records in Peru according to Schulenberg et al. and without any accepted record on eBird, while S. striata is an uncommon boreal migrant to the northern Amazonia, with some scattered vagrant records elsewhere in Peru, including the one in Cieneguilla, so much more likely.
