Wow! Absolutely an awesome surprise after a very slow afternoon bird-wise. Was NOT expecting to find one of these here. First appeared at 3:34 pm. A stunning male seen in the general vicinity of these coordinates: 34.00075° N, 116.14579° W The bird moved around a lot, and never perched in something other than a Joshua Tree. I observed the bird for about 5 minutes before losing it. Obvious woodpecker/sapsucker, two white stripes on face, the upper one starting at the eye and goes backwards, the lower one starts at the base of the bill and goes to past the eye. Red throat patch, very bold white wing patch, striking yellow belly, barring on the sides, and the rest of the plumage solid black. The bird was silent throughout my observation, except for the noise of it pecking into the bark. According to eBird, this is the first record within the national park! I’m very curious to see if this bird will stick around! For those of you that don’t know me, I’m from Orange County, Ca, and I’m on a quick trip to the park. I may check again tomorrow to see if it’s still here. Lifer for me! BOC photo for now, much better, real photos will be added on Wednesday or Thursday.
