8/29/22 - After doing some more research, I have a higher level of confidence that this was a YBCU. The following are some of the reason. - Audio recordings from the Macaulay Library that are comparable to mine. Three were referred to me and I include another two: https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/472772071 https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/470251741 https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/469543641 https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/465716701 https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/38141791 -Columbia spotted frogs vocalize primarily during the spring breeding season which for S.E. Alaska is mid-April to mid-May. This vocalizing is described as a clucking sound, similar to clicking your tongue against the roof of your mouth. I reviewed samples of Columbia spotted frog vocalizations online including at https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=10155065479016642. While clearly similar to YBCU vocalization, to my ear the frog sound was a somewhat higher pitch and lacked the YBCU's hollow, woody sound quality. - Appropriate Habitat: The habitat present is a small pond within a large marshy area and nearby small creek. The surrounding area is thick woodlands, primarily consisting of dense thickets of willow, alder and cottonwoods. Per the reference materials I reviewed this is consistent with typical YBCU habitat. - I am advised although YBCU sightings in this area are rare, this time of the year is good for a sighting. -Daily Pattern Of Vocalizing (from Cornell Lab "Birds of the World") "Kowlp Call given most frequently in early morning before 0700 (Hamilton III and Hamilton 1965), but also uttered at all times of day, including night (Bent 1940a)." I made my recording at 7:20 a.m. local time. Update 8/28/22: It has been suggested to me that these recordings may be a Columbia spotted frog. After listening to some audio of the Columbia spotted frog I definitely see where that presents a good argument. These frogs do occur in SE Alaska and the community garden area is appropriate habitat. Original comments: Sounds very similar to the "ka-ka-ka-kow-kowp" song, which sounds somewhat hollow and wooden and slows slightly at the end. I'm definitely not sure and will wait to see what the experts think. I really regret not posting this earlier. I was preoccupied with recording the wood ducks and didn't pay attention and then I simply didn't review until now.
