An Eastern Osprey perching and preening its feathers. Eastern Ospreys (Pandion haliaetus cristatus) are found from eastern Indonesia through lowland New Guinea to Australia and some nearby Pacific Islands. Ospreys are fishing eagles, and are adept at catching fish with their huge, curved talons during a dramatic dive. Ospreys are relatively common along the coast and estuaries of south-western Australia. This adult Osprey was perching on a dead tree on the edge of Peel Inlet, south of Perth in Western Australia. It was preening, and occasionally calling to its mate and allowed me to approach it closely – a wonderful experience with a trusting wild eagle. Elevation: 0 m. Date added to IBC: May 26, 2019.
