Beautiful Purple Swamphens - one eating bulrush roots, one preening. The spectacular Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio) is a large, common waterbird in the rail family. Unlike other rails it is brightly coloured, with an oversized red beak and frontal shield and an iridescent purple and blue neck. This bird belongs to the more brightly coloured race Porphyrio porphyrio bellus that is restricted to south-western Australia. One Swamphen was vigorously digging into a clump of bulrush roots (Typha orientalis) at Lake Monger in the late afternoon, submerging its head to get food then holding the morsel in its foot as it ate. Its mate stood nearby and preened its feathers. Elevation: 13 m. Date added to IBC: June 18, 2018.
