A Falklands Steamer Duck pair mating in the sea then ‘steaming’. The Falklands Steamer Duck (Tachyeres brachypterus) locally known as a “Logger” is a goose-sized, flightless carnivorous marine duck endemic to the Falkland Islands. When agitated, Steamer Ducks ‘steam’ – thrashing their stubby wings on the water – reminiscent of old-time paddle steamers. This pair was mating in the sea off Bleaker Island, south-east of East Falkland. After being released, the female surfaced and swam with the male (with the orange bill) and both birds began ‘steaming’ across the sea surface. Elevation: 19 m. Date added to IBC: February 4, 2019.
