A female Bateleur preening on a windy day. The Bateleur (Terathopius ecaudatus) is one of the most colourful eagles in the world, with its red facial skin and feet, and elegant black, chestnut and silver plumage. Bateleurs occur over most of sub-Saharan Africa, and are fairly common residents of open savanna and thornveld. Bateleurs are diurnal scavengers and hunters, and fly with a characteristic side-to-side rocking movement, reminiscent of a tightrope walker. Their diet includes smaller birds (particularly pigeons and doves), small reptiles and small mammals as well as smaller carcasses. They eat large termites when they emergence in swarms from their mounds. Elevation: 287 m. Date added to IBC: June 9, 2018.
