Hamerkop fishing on the Shingwedzi River causeway, Kruger Park. The weird-looking Hamerkop (Scopus umbretta) is the only living species in its genus. It gets its name from the shape of its bill and the long crest on the back of its head that is reminiscent of a hammer. The Hamerkop occurs widely throughout sub-Saharan Africa and is usually found closely associated with water. This bird was on the flowing causeway of the Shingwedzi River in Kruger Park, alert and hoping to catch any small fish crossing the causeway. Elevation: 287 m. Date added to IBC: April 18, 2018.
