A ventral view of a nearly fledged Bornean Swiftlet on the ground. If split, one of the least known species of birds in the world. Endemic to a few mountains in NW Borneo. The only genetically proven colony of this species, previously found on Mount Kinabalu, was destroyed by an earthquake in 2016. Our birding group found this fledgling on the ground. This still flightless bird had its leg entangled in its nest. The struggle to release itself probably resulted in the nest to fall on the ground. Unable to save the bird I killed it to save it from death by starvation. The greenish gloss on the back and neck are diagnostic, instead of the blueish gloss of the far more common Glossy Swiftlets. ID confirmed by Bornean resident birders and guides. Elevation: 1121 m. Date added to IBC: December 19, 2017.
