NPR/NGS RADIO EXPEDITIONS Show: Breashears - Everest Log of DAT #: 3 Engineer: Breashears Date: 4/11/2001 ng = not good ok = okay g =good vg = very good April 11th in Khumbu region of Nepal Breashears walking along and talking. 1:15 I wasn't actually a member of the Om team. I wasn't actually invited to join, but I found it utterly unbearable that my closest friends, mountain climbers and filmmakers were going without me. Just getting involved in filming. So I started campaign to get myself invited, mostly begging and pleading. I must have been such a nuisance -- in fact that was my strategy. And they had an answer to all my pleas mostly that it was too expensive but I had a little money saved up and so I said, okay if its too expensive, I'll make my own way. So 22 years ago I found myself on this trail paying to work for someone else. And I loved every minute of it. Because I was in the Himalayas.. .I would get to go to a place that had just been pages in a book. 5:00 I was young 23.. .I was sort of a western Sherpa, I carried loads.. .I felt it was such an honor.. .always being there at the ready.. . And that was my first experience in the Himalayas and it will always carry with it a tremendous importance because if I hadn't refused to give up, I really have no idea what course my life would have taken. I came away from that experience felling that I was very comfortable in high elevations, my body adapted well, I wasn't afraid of going into thin air. The company of the Sherpas, I enjoyed their culture Nice part where he describes components of the expedition: 7:28 I enjoyed the entire process of an expedition: organization. . .to hiring of the porters and the yaks. . . the carrying of loads to different camps. . .the sense of relief at getting back down safely and getting back down to thick air. . . and there's a wonderful rhythm and cycle to an expedition 8:34 VG 8:36 dishes and sound of clapping 9:02 inside a Sherpa lodge at lunch, sounds of setting dishes, voice murmurs in background, as if reciting something, more voices pouring beverage, stirring. 11: 11 sound of water more dishes Phone call 11:30 people in lodge.. .need telephone going off ...(talks about how phone) 12:17 phone ringing (phone is big change) hello, talking .... 13:14 rings again 13:29 speaking into phone. 13:39 phone, answering again.. .14:18 14:23 Yak train going by (not stereo mic.) whistling, bells soft drums, VG, yelling to 1553 16:17 People laughing at him and his mic 1733 17:46 - 18:42 VG Music Yak train approaching and leaving Meets old friends (They know him by the name "Daby") woman and two girls Distant "Daby, Daby" 18:55 - talking to kids, how many years.. .I have two girls.. . 21:04 Where is your husband?. . . --He's a...
