觀察細節
Jon called this bird out as it flew to the south with a flock of Bonaparte's Gulls at a distance of 150-200 meters at about 9:05 am when we were 3.85 kilometers west-southwest of the Dana Point (33° 26' 32" N, 117° 45' 05" W). It made only a single pass by the boat before disappearing on the horizon as it continued flying south. We later encountered a large flock of Bonaparte's Gulls foraging on and over on the water in the direction in which we lost the Little Gull, but we were unable to relocate this bird. My views of this bird were sufficient to identify it as an adult (or nearly adult) Little Gull, but they were insufficient to check and recheck the characters. I did manage to get two identifiable photographs of this bird as it flew off. This was a conspicuously small gull that I thought was comparable in size to the Bonaparte's Gulls with which it was associated, yet it seemed to have shorter and more rounded wings. The body was plump, there was not much of a head protruding in front of the wings, and the wings were relatively broad and with more rounded tips than those of the Bonaparte's Gulls. I saw a tail, but I am now unable to say much about its length or shape. Given the brevity of my views of this bird as it flew by, I concentrated on seeing the wing pattern, so I missed other details. I nevertheless noted that the head, underparts, and I think the tail were white, yet the back and almost the entire upperside of each wing was pale gray. A narrow, white band extended along the trailing edge of the wing and at least most of the way around the wingtip, yet I noted neither black nor a white wedge on the outer primaries on the upperside of the wing. I also noted that the underwings were extensively blackish, but given the brevity of my observations, I was unable to determine if the underwing coverts were black or white. I was likewise unable to discern in the field a dark cap, an auricular spot, or any of the soft-part colors, but one of my photographs does show an auricular spot and apparently also some suggestion of a dark cap.
