Observed and photographed on a Western Juniper in our yard between cabin and the Williamson River. See photo; an obvious sapsucker for which I was first attracted by yellowish on its breast. Photo has been circulated. Comments by Kevin Spencer, etc., from these emails: From: Kevin Spencer Date: Sat, Apr 6, 2013 at 9:22 AM Subject: FW: Lonesome Duck Sapsucker To: Alan , "dhewitt37: gmail.com" , "dhaupt: tulelake.k12.ca.us" , David Irons I'm forwarding this image and my reply Marshal to others , so that they might be able to consider the species. Marshal, This looks like a very good candidate for YBSA. It looks like a male. The white on the back is extensive. The complete black border around the red on the throat it there. The lack of red on the nape supports it also. It is not a female RNSA as they would have some white on the chin area. I wouldn't get overly concerned about "barring" on the back but rather how extensive the white on the back is. Age might play into the presence of a barring patter. For now, I'd call this bird a YBSA. Nice photo. When did it show up? I'm sending this to some other people.
