Here and the next photo we see the wide wing bar that extends across the primaries and secondaries. Greater Scaup, Redhead, and Ring-necked all have such a prominent bar, but it should be white in the case of Greater Scaup. This and other photos show that the inner secondaries have a bluish-gray coloration. Noted also is the white belly patch.

Note of Dec 21: See S41091624, which has been updated. After input from duck experts including Mason Sieges, I have decided that this is a Redhead. I'm learning the original notes and photo comments as they were originally entered. This was the fourth day that I have photographed this duck. I believe it is in the genus Aythya, and most likely either a Redhead or Ring-necked female. By mid-December alternate plumage should be acquired even by a juvenile. But one should consider that for some reason this bird has not migrated south as soon and as far it should. It could be a juvenile that from a late hatch or otherwise developmentally delayed. Another possibility is that it is a hybrid. In the photos I make comments about what I see in those photos. I welcome opinions by others as to what this bird is.
