Mark’s notes: Day 1 Continuing, with other ducks, third Gwinnett County record (1993, 2024, and now 2025), found and identified here this morning by Sanjay and Liz at about 33.9880081, -84.0058653. First winter bird retaining its white upper facial stripe or line from the upper bill to below the eyes, and some white around the eyes. Observed from the vantage point (33.9866584, -84.0075149) in front of the subdivision’s private property gate. - - - The little lake measures about 350 yards from the dam to the far shores opposite the dam, is about 225 yards wide, and it’s 400+ yards viewing from the vantage point diagonally across to the furthest end of the lake where the beaver lodge is. Spotting scope recommended. - - - In between cruises out to dive for fish mid-lake the merganser was often resting and snoozing with other ducks and mergansers very close to the right rear shore in the tiny cove in the very far (365 yards) right back corner in the shade (can be hard to see). - - - Park along the driveway (dirt, at 33.9859094, -84.0062999), be aware of the drop off from the asphalt from busy Collins Hill Road into the driveway (or come in more on the sides of the entrance on the more gradually sloped grass), or park at the fire station (33.9853434, -84.0029994) southeast up the road and walk down. - - - Screenshots from the phonescoped video, open images and zoom for possibly a better look.
