Adult male Vermilion Flycatcher observed perched on weathered fence post in open agricultural edge habitat. Positive ID based on following field marks and behavior: Plumage: Brilliant scarlet-red crown and underparts from throat through belly, contrasting sharply with brown-gray upperparts and wings. Gray-brown back showed subtle darker streaking. Wings appeared uniformly dark brown with faint pale edging on coverts. Long, notched tail extended well beyond wing tips. Small white spot visible at base of lower mandible. Structure: Small tyrant flycatcher, approximately 5.5-6 inches. Proportionally large head with slight crest when alert. Bill short, broad-based, and black - typical flycatcher structure. Upright posture when perched with tail occasionally pumped downward. Behavior: Bird remained on exposed perch for extended period (15+ minutes), making short aerial sallies to capture insects before returning to same post. Classic flycatcher hunting behavior. Alert posture with frequent head turns scanning territory. No vocalizations heard during observation period. Habitat context: Open scrubland/agricultural interface with scattered fence line and nearby water source approximately 200m distant. Consistent with species' preference for open areas near riparian zones. Observation conditions: Excellent lighting (morning), unobstructed views at approximately 20-35 feet distance. Multiple photographs obtained documenting all diagnostic features. Zero question on identification - diagnostic plumage and behavior eliminate all other species. Duration: 15+ minutes of observation.
