Spotted by Kaitlin Spear along with Nate Stephenson behind 76 Seashore Ave. This is presumably the continuing bird first found here on Monday, 24 November, but not shared/confirmed until 26 November. We noted the bird's plain brownish tinged gray upperparts and paler whitish-gray underparts. The undertail coverts were yellow and sharply cutoff. The rump was also yellow. The breast showed a faint (sometimes more intense?) yellow wash across the center. There was a distinct white eyering. The crown looked essentially medium gray, but in some photos a small patch of chestnut could be seen, but not noted in the field). The bill was fine and sharply pointed as for birds in this genus. A notable behavioral feature was how the bird wagged and flared its tail. This allowed us to locate it rather easily. Like the other warblers, the Virginia's worked mid-height probing leaf clusters. We heard the bird call a few times, giving a squeaky tink that Bill likened to the sound of new magic marker tip on a whiteboard. This is the 5th record for Maine, with two previous fall (late September and early November) and two spring (late May) records, all being found on Monhegan Island. The first record for the state was 21 May 1998 and photographed by Geoff Dennis (see page 307 here), but the photo (on page 405 here) and record have not yet been reviewed by the Maine Bird Records Committee. That 1998 record was the first for New England.
