Within an hour of seeing the tropic-bird, Ned Brinkley let out a yell from the stern that he had a dark petrel. "Its a HERALD PETREL!!" he yelled. The bird came up along the port side where I had been sitting, so I got a great look at the underwing pattern and was able to grab my camera for some shots before it pulled away and we began chasing it at 30+ knots. The captain tried to keep up with it for a while and I think everyone on the boat got a good look at it before we slowed down. The bird was a dark morph HERALD PETREL with the diagnostic under-wing pattern. (Trindade has been since split off from the Herald Petrel complex.)
