Adult, “continuing” from a couple days ago; possible very distant doc shots to be added. Initially observed about 11:15/11:30 ish from the NW levee as the bird stood on the ground in the shade of the farthest-out salt cedars along the inlet canal. Studied through scope for a few minutes but too far for photos. Expecting that we would be able to approach closer, we took our eyes off the bird and resumed scanning area for other birds. Within 5-10 minutes we looked back at where it was and it was gone. We were pretty sure that it had not gotten by us moving W/NE, so we assumed that it was concealed or had moved E/SE. Did not relocate bird until a couple hours later as we scanned from the southeast vantage point and spotted it sitting on top of and under a clump of dead sticks on the shoreline directly across to the west. Tried for photos-will see. Large raptor mostly black with white upper chest, throat, and cheek, bare red face, short black crest, long yellow leg. Did not see in flight except when it jumped up and down a couple times, showing white flash across primaries.
