Very curious- several weeks ago our bluebird box was taken over by northern house wrens. The bluebirds were clearly in distress when it happened and were trying to reclaim it, but eventually gave it up. A few days later I noticed them hanging around a house finch nest on top of an AC unit on our house. Fast forward to today, August 2- I've been sitting outside for an hour watching this nest, and indeed, the bluebirds took over the house finch nest. I observed the female sitting on the nest and then bringing a caterpillar and feeding. I could not see the babies since the unit is on the 2nd floor, and I'm below so I dont know the state of eggs or babies or how many there are. The female came back to the nest several times within the hour I observed, and the male also came with food. The female also removed a fecal sac. Side note- we came back from a couple days away last week and discovered the original bluebird nest box on the ground with the top ripped off- obviously the work of some animal. There were feathers all over so it appears the momma house wren did not make it. The male was around calling constantly.
