Presumably the adult first briefly seen by Mark Harper passing the obs at Whitburn this morning. I relocated the bird in flight distantly from South Shields pier, heading towards the harbour mouth at about 12:40. I lost it for about ten minutes but fortunately it returned flying close past me to drop into a feeding flock of BHGs, just before the first other birders arrived. It then continued to show extremely well for the remaining hour and half I was there, and on until dusk
