媒体文件注释

Faint call, but included because it was atypical. Structurally, this was a barred owl wail-and-hoot call, but the wail (i.e., the introductory) component was very unusual and was somewhat reminiscent of a solo long hoot. The hooting sequence following that introductory cry was not atypical.

观察细节

At stop 3 (0.8), a barred owl gave a "who cooks for you" singlet in the distance to the south in the sixth minute. Perhaps the same bird gave a WCFY doublet much closer a short time later, but from the same direction. For the purposes of enumeration, I logged these two calls as having come from the same bird. I then heard a barred owl relatively close to the east give a wail-n-hoot call, although the wail element was atypical and was somewhat reminiscent of a solo long hoot. Total = 2 owls. At stop 4 (1.2), I heard two barred owls. One gave several bouts of WCFY calls in the distance to the SE. I assumed this was the first bird I heard at the previous stop. A second owl (which I concluded was a new one) gave a WCFY singlet and a solo shot hoot in the medium distance to the south. Running total = 3 owls. At stop 5 (1.6), I heard two owls. In the first 5 minutes one gave a single WCFY call in the distance to the south, which I judged was west of the second bird at the last stop. In the second 5 minutes, shortly after my first bout of NSWO song, one gave a wail-n-hoot quite close to me to the NW. Running total = 5 owls. At stop 6 (2.0), I heard four owls. To the east, I heard both distant WCFY calls and somewhat closer, a wail-n-hoot call. I judged that these two were most likely the two from the previous stop. <5 sec after the wail-n-hoot to the east, a new owl gave a wail-n-hoot well to the west of me, and another new bird gave a WCFY doublet, also to the west. Having a wail-n-hoot "answered" by another bird giving a wail-n-hoot is quite unusual in my experience. Running total = 7 owls. At stop 9, a barred owl gave WCFY doublets to the east of me during the first 5 minutes. The bird had a distinctively atypical cadence during the first WCFY of each call, and the overall call had a low pitch. During the 2nd and 3rd minutes, the bird gave 7 doublets well to the east of me. During the 5th minute, apparently the same bird (given the distinctive vocalization) gave three more, but much closer to me than the first bout of calls. Running total = 8 owls. At stop 10 (3.4, intersection with Cutacross Road), an owl was giving WCFY singlets repeatedly during the first three minutes at the stop. Given the distance and direction, I judged that this was a new bird. Running and final total = 9 barred owls.
