Adult male Calliope Hummingbird, present since initially reported the previous day by Henri Truchassout, here photographed in flight by Curtis A. Marantz on 15 April 2024 at Alice Keck Park Memorial Garden, Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara County, California.
观察细节
I saw the continuing bird visit multiple times in the first hour and 15 minutes of my visit, but over the next hour-plus it failed to reappear. Each visit was to the large shrub that was closest to the Arrellaga Street entrance to the park, and seemingly the northernmost of the four or so plants. When this bird visited the flowers, it was quiet, unobtrusive, and often foraging on the far sides of the flower spikes, which made it difficult to photograph, but the views were good. Although past reports were that this bird visited the lower spikes of this plant, we saw it visit both the lower and upper spikes and on both the north and south sides of the plant. Moreover, I never saw this bird chased off, in large part because during our entire visit, I saw only two other hummingbirds visit this plant and neither did so any more regularly than the Calliope, which visited once every 10-20 minutes, each time staying from maybe 30 seconds to a minute or two before flying off, often into what appeared to be the large Ficus trees above. This said, I never studied this bird carefully though my binoculars, so my views were obtained primarily through the viewfinder of my camera when I took photos. Moreover, I never saw the Calliope with another bird, so I could only estimate that it was quite small. This was a conspicuously small hummingbird that had a slim, tubular bill that was straight and at least relatively short. The forehead was sloping and the crown was rounded, both on a head that was unremarkable for the bird’s size. The neck was relatively short and inconspicuous, and the body was plump, full-chested, and with a posture when hovering that was roughly diagonal with the tail held upward approximately parallel with the ground. The wings were long and slim, but I saw them only when the bird was hovering, given that this bird never landed in view. I also thought the tail was quite short and with rounded corners, but I could not discern in the field either the precise length or shape of the tail. I also never saw the legs or feet on a bird that I saw exclusively in flight. This was a well-marked that I thought to be likely an adult male. The crown, back and sides of the neck, and the upperparts from the back and scapulars down through the rump to the upperside of the tail were an iridescent green color that was not unlike the shade apparent on an Anna’s Hummingbird, though I saw none of the latter for a direct comparison. I thought there was a white spot behind the eye, but I cannot recall the finer details of its size or shape, and I never clearly saw the rest of the face pattern. The wings appeared to be dark, but given that this bird was hovering the entire time, I was unable to see any more detail. I thought the upperside of the tail was green, but I cannot recall seeing the spread tail nor did I note any white or rufous in the tail. Most obvious was the discrete streaking on the throat that extended from the chin down to the junction with the breast, and seemingly flaring somewhat at the corners. The dark streaks generally appeared to be blackish, but when the light was just right, typically when the bird was facing toward me and often partially obscured by the flower spikes, I noted a deep, wine-red iridescence to the dark streaks, and also that they were separated by a background of white streaks that were roughly comparable in width. I thought the underparts were whitish centrally, but I noted at least some buff on the flanks. I was less sure if there was any green iridescence to the flanks, and I have no recollection of noting the pattern or color on the undertail coverts or the underside of the tail. I thought the bill and eyes were both dark, but I was unable to see their precise coloration, and as noted above, I failed entirely to see the legs or feet.
