Identification pending additional review of photos. (I really hope someone can get closer photos this weekend. A Desert Belle cruise might be a good strategy.) Others have identified this bird as Pomarine, and it may well be, but after my own observations in the field and study of the available images so far (through 11pm Friday night), I'm leaning a little more toward Parasitic. In my initial views in the field, I thought the chest seemed a little too slender for Pomarine and although others have claimed to see a “double flash” of white in the primaries, the underwing primary coverts looked solidly dark to me. Studying more at home, I still think the underwing primary coverts are dark in most views (although Ronnie's photos seem to show a moderate double-flash), the neck looks relatively slender, and the head and bill relatively small for Pomarine. I still get the impression this bird has the "pin head" or "bottle head" structure of Parasitic more than the bulky, almost Herring Gull-like head of a Pomarine. Although this varies a bit with photo angle and wing position, I get more of a sense of narrow wing base than a broad wing base, too. Immature bird, probably in its first spring but non-juvenile, non-adult jaegers are notoriously difficult to age, especially at this distance.
