This recording reflects the whole range of two-toned call notes. There are some that are a bit higher and more ringing and tinny almost approaching what I would expect for type 5 while others are lower and huskier and some of those lower ones have the initial rising element like Cassia. These calls are the only ones that I am including as Cassia Crossbill for now, but the bulk of the flock could be Cassia as well and the difference between these calls was not apparent in the field. This is one of the big two-toned call flocks with a quite few typical Cassia Crossbill notes mixed in. These notes have an up-down quality to the lower component and stand out (as do the type 2s) as lower than the din of type 5 calls. Look for these notes at 0:10, 0:23, and 0:29 (though they are visible throughout)
观察细节
Though nearly all the two-toned crossbills here could be Cassia, there were only a few that showed the uptick at the start of the call that is common in many Cassia Crossbills from Southern Idaho. These showed up on this recording of the big flock. I estimate at least 3 given how frequent these calls are, but that is conservative and there could be as many as 10 of these more typical Cassia sounding birds. It is hard to say exactly how many in the din of calls. On this recording the typical Cassia calls are spread throughout, but they are more clearly visible on the spectrogram at 0:10, 0:23, and 0:29 (though they are visible throughout).
