Fantastic find by Keith Dieroff yesterday evening. This morning, after Mourad had last seen this flying towards the lift bridge, George, Mourad, and I drove down to Burlington Beach, hoping to find it swimming just offshore. We arrived, and less than 5 minutes later, the ANMU flies past us, heading toward the lift bridge, roughy 25 meters offshore. I alerted the small group of birders just down the beach that it was going to fly right infront of them. I laid my scope down and ran after it as fast as I could, eventually reaching the exact speed it was traveling! It then splashed down in the water and floated around for a while. It frequently dove and only stayed above water for 5 seconds at a time. It kinda was like a big NYC rat swimming in the lake. Our last views of it were just before 8am as it flew out of the cove at the lift bridge, across the lake more than 200m out, and land around the Joseph Brant Hospital. Several attempts to relocate by many birders but all have came up unsuccessful at the moment.
