Weather: Fair. Part A: 5:40 AM. Weather: Fair. *Bird not seen. This one-figure succession has more drawn-out figures than usual in M. ruficollis, approximating somewhat M. gilvicollis but doesn't have the really drawn-out characters of gilvicollis. Also, the pattern remains constant through the long succession, which is like ruficollis and different from the accelerating quality of gilvicollis. Therefore I assign it to M. ruficollis. This was in the intermediate woods before Estacao A. Par B: 8:15 AM. Weather: Clear. While I was busy with Chiroxiphia pareola in the same spot, later a Micrastur "song" in brushy low growth near me (but hidden from view). This was rather similar to song of Part A but had nasal quality. Before I could get changed over to it, it stopped singing. A few minutes later I played my Micrastur field tapes* and this is the reaction to M. ruficollis zonothorax. In background are heard some other nasal one-figure calls that are approximately the same (by memory) as those I first heard. Part C (not announced): Similar "dawn song" type reaction to playback of recording in Part B. On 10 Dec 1971 I heard at Estacao A at dawn some one-figure succession. It was very far away but seemed about typical of M. ruficollis. Micrastur field tapes used for playback: First, M. gilvicollis 5 (two-note and react playback from Cut 1); then unidentified Micrastur. Reaction: apparently none. Second: (after several-minute delay) - M. ruficollis zonothorax 1-4). Reaction: As recorded in Part B. After bird finally stopped singing I again tried playback, with pauses between of: M. gilvicollis 5), Unidentified Micrastur 6), M.r. zonothorax 1-4). As there was no apparent reaction with any of these, I tried playback of the part just recorded and this brought no reaction either. Habitat: Forest.
