**Rare. First Spring record for California. First detected the bird by song way down a canyon with lupine. I was unfamiliar with the song but knew it was wren like. I initially thought it was an odd House Wren, but went closer to investigate. After about 5 minutes, I was able to get on the bird. What presented itself was an extremely obvious Sedge Wren. The bird had an orange-buffy wash covering the whole bird, no obvious supercillium, streaky back, and a stubby, shorty tail. Identification was never really a question, but Marsh Wren was ruled out by the lack of a strong suppercillium, short bill, and song. The bird continued to sing throughout my whole observation of ~20 minutes, and was cooperative the whole time. The bird was in a small patch of lupine on a hillside for most of the observation, but it eventually flew down to a small patch of rushes.
