***MEGA | first New England record | first noticed by the homeowner, on 5 November but didn’t become consistent for a few days. It was eventually reported to Derek Lovitch as a late Ruby-throated, he was able to see and photograph it on 20 Nov, properly identifying it as a Selasphorus hummingbird. Scott Weidensaul banded it today, giving us measurements to confirm this a Broad-tailed Hummingbird. Wing: 49.15; tail: 29.5; culmen: 18.62; R5: 5.44(!!!). Immature by bill corrugations. Male by size and plumage (heavy throat stippling). Notes on rectrices: R1: very broad and all green; R2: no rufous at base of inner web; R3: extensive black in the inner web; R4: pointed (typical of HY male). Very vocal, an apparently diagnostic call but not one we were familiar enough with to be confident in the field; recorded. Back color was blue-green, rather than the bronze-green that young Rufous/Allen’s show. Banding notes from Scott Weidensaul: Band # J51299 11/21/22 Broad-tailed hummingbird Age: HY Sex: M Wing: 49.15 mm Tail: 30 mm Bill: 18.62 mm Grooving on upper mandible: 15% Iridescent gorget feathers: 0 Fat (0-5 score): 1 Width of R5 (outer tail feather): 5.44 mm
