This bird was apparently present (based on previous photos on eBird at the time of this write up) since at least November 9th. If this is accepted, it will be the first eBird record for Texas for Smooth-billed Ani. There is some ongoing discussion at this point on the Facebook page "What's this Bird?" (a post was first made on Advanced Bird ID, but the delay for approval of posts led me to post on WTB) After reviewing my photos and comparison photos on eBird, I believe this to be the first state record of Smooth-billed Ani, but I am not 100% sure and am posting for awareness--I'd rather post with a large caveat than withhold information of a potential state first for the state listers. This bird was accompanied by an obvious Groove-billed Ani. In comparison with the GBAN, this bird had a bill completely devoid of longitudinal grooves typical of GBAN on both sides of both the upper and lower mandibles. The superior 1/3 of the upper mandible was "pinched" into a sharp-edge keel. On this keel was noted to be some superficial grooving of the bill in a transverse (vertical) orientation. Review of approximately 100 photos on eBird of each species showed this to be a fairly common field mark for SBAN, but I was unable to find any GBAN with this present. In comparison with the obvious GBAN also present, the bird had less facial skin showing, which the Sibley Guide points to as a sign for SBAN. Guides from the Rio Grande Birding Festival reported hearing this bird give a two part call that seemed consistent with Groove-billed Ani. No vocalizations were noted at the time of the sighting. Hopefully others can get out to see this bird and make recordings of the voice. For posterity, Aidan Rominger and I seemed to come to the mutual conclusion that this was a SBAN in the field, although Aidan was a much stronger believer in the idea than I was, especially after I saw some of the initial feedback online of my back of camera photos. I believe he suggested SBAN first, but I cannot recall if I said it while looking at photos or if he did as it was an understandably exciting time. If this does turn out to be accepted as a first Texas record, all Kudos can and should go to Aidan as he stayed the course on the SBAN-train for the course of our many discussions with many individuals. I will add a few photos this evening for illustrative purposes.
