; smaller than RBGU, hooded, bill is slight, seen in photo, not BOGU I arrived here at about 1445 and spotted this one small gull immediately. My first impression was that it was a Franklin's Gull. This was just a quick stop that I had made, on the way to running some errands, so I did not have my camera with me, and had also forgotten my cell phone. I drove quickly back home and retrieved camera and cell phone, drove back to Celoron Boat Launch, and took two photos of the gull, which was in the same spot where it had been when I had first arrived. Unfortunately, a man walked out onto the hotel's dock next to the lawn where the gulls were roosting. He started power-washing the dock, and the flock flew off. The Ring-billed Gulls soon returned, but the small gull disappeared; I could not relocate it here, nor at two sites west of here along the shoreline in Lakewood. I kept trying to talk myself out of calling this bird a FRGU, since LAGU would be more expected here, but again, my immediate first impression was FRGU, a species that I have been used to seeing every autumn, since I'd been living in Washington State until last month. The bird had a short bill, broad white eye-arcs (goggle-like), and white underparts, all of which point more to Franklin's Gull than to Laughing Gull. I thought the size of the bird relative to the Ring-billed Gulls with it was also a better match for FRGU, since a LAGU would be somewhat closer in size to that of the RBGU's.
