(notes by Frank Lin, 2022) Found this image when reviewing a printed collection graciously donated to SPES by Peter Woods, photos printed in 2005 but this image has a file name indicating 02-03-04. Peter was able to send additional images but these turned out to have been taken a year later on 1/25/2005 and 2/12/2005 - the bird's feathers appeared slightly different as well. Scaup parent is likely Lesser Scaup based on head shape and frequency of the species on Lost Lagoon. Dark brown head with dark eyes and sloping bill profile similar to Canvasback, with strong contrast between the brown chest and pale grey flanks, but white feathering at bill base and peaked crown reminiscent of Lesser Scaup. Bill is black with a pale subterminal patch.
