See notes under Red Crossbill-Type 2, below. Although I think most (all?) up there were referable to Type 2, several were vexing to me. Media included and discussion below. Macaulay assets ML470212801, ML470213261; these are of the same bird. The apparent flight call (first media object here) comprises two sharply down-slurred elements, run together so fast that I hear them as single "chup" notes--certainly unlike the standard-issue Type 2 flight calls I was hearing out there. I photographed the cones on which the bird was foraging (https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/127968515); I believe they are the cones of an Engelmann spruce. I also got a not-great photo of the bird (second media object here) after it had flown out of the tree whose cones it had been foraging on. Media asset MLML470222791. Dunno what to make of this. Distant Red Crossbill in flight, making these sounds; looks like there's enough there spectrographically for someone more expert than I to weigh in, yes?
