Accurate count of 38 singing individuals and one silent female observed by JMS. Singing individuals were largely stationary. Close individuals (<50 m) were tallied as we passed them on the trail, and distant individuals were counted every 250 m. Most locations had 2-3 individuals in earshot, with a maximum of 6. The 2 mile walk was broken up by an older stand of jack pines and other deciduous trees that was devoid of Kirtland's. The first 3/4 mi transect had 22 singing individuals plus the female, and the second 3/4 transect had 16 singing individuals. The individual in the first set of photos was in heavy tail molt. Most individuals had reduced black in the face and moderate brown centers to back feathers, which may indicate first year males according to Dunn and Garrett (1997) and Pyle (1997). If true, I wonder if this habitat is relatively new or inferior and therefore relegated to a younger demographic, or whether the population is growing enough such that a large portion of the general population is first year birds?
