Male. Perched, I watched for 20 seconds or more. Great viewing angle and light. From about 50 feet distance. Huge Pale bill, distinct red throat with white border, dark head, dark wings with white wing bars. I know black-headed grosbeaks, this bird was similar size and shape. Did not hear voice. Checked with Sibley and there was a match. My bad photo shows proportions and wing bar, but photo was taken when bird turned his head away so the angle does not show large pale bill or red throat.
