Ad; photos. The Ross's Gull was offshore sitting on the water, just beyond the breaking waves when we arrived. After a few minutes it lifted off, and flew directly toward the pack of assembled birders, coming within feet of us before crossing the road and dropping down into the Surfer's Parking Lot on the east side of Highway 1. I stayed in this lot foraging for about 15 minutes, before being bumped by dog walkers and cars. It foraged along the roadside of the road to the east of this parking lot for a while, flushing each time a car passed and nearly getting hit several times. It then flew back across Highway 1 and ended up in the park about 500 yards south of here. It foraged on the grassy lawn and along the walkways of that park till near dark, when it headed out to sea. Overall spectacular views of an other-worldly bird. My only fear is that if it keeps up this foraging behavior, it's only a matter of time before it gets hit by a dog, or captured by a feral cat (many lurking around the harbor area).
