Pacific Loon with Common Loons off Cliff House, York, York County, Maine. Digiscoped with iPhone through Leica spotting scope.
观察细节
This bird was with a flock of Common Loons a fair distance off Cliff House. It was found 26 Dec by David Nelson. Although distant, I could repeatedly pick it out based on its smaller size, slimmer neck, thinner bill, and occasionally even the sharp black line down the side of the neck that lacked any pale patch invading the dark neck sides as shown by Common Loons near it. The head seemed more smoothly rounded and sleek. The flanks were dark to the water line, and the bird never showed any suggestion of a white femoral patch, which might be shown by Arctic Loon. The bird was also on the small size end compared to what I recall for Arctic Loon. In some views, I thought that I could make out a thin black "chin strap" where head and neck crease. It's always tricky to know this dark line is there versus shadow and creased feathers, but compared to similar angles with Common Loon where I could see white at the same area on the foreneck, this line did seem real on the Pacific Loon. When looking toward me, the head and neck of the Pacific Loon showed a narrower head and neck. Maybe a subtle and inconsistent difference was noted in the diving motion, with the Pacific Loon rising up slightly higher and then arching neck more as it leapt into the dive.
