First bird seen on west slope. Standing a head above the adjacent Herring Gulls.
观察细节
Both immatures. Overall lighter colored large gulls with large bi-colored pink bill with black tip, white primaries with short primary extension, and larger in size than adjacent Herring Gulls. Both seen on west facing slope near to each other. Second noted gull is a darker individual showing a darker tail and body than the first, but still with characteristics of Glaucous Gull. An additional one was later seen near the center of the landfill after the other gulls had left due to the Red-tail Hawk flyover. But previous to the hawk the gulls on the west slope had been raised by machinery and had resettled. So this final gull may have been one of the original two seen, or a third one. Earliest winter sighting in St. Joseph County. Usually not seen until Feb/March, when ice cover is highest on Great Lakes. Early presence possibly due to recent subzero temperatures and some early lake freezing, ahead of 2014-2015 winter season, with observation date being day 357 of year. https://coastwatch.glerl.noaa.gov/statistic/statistic.html
