观察细节
"The bird was initially seen on December 17, at about 2:30 pm. It was working steadily at a spot on the trunk of a Douglas Fir, about 20 feet up. It remained there until 5:00 pm or so, except for a brief period while a Cooper's Hawk perched nearby. It returned the next morning at first light, and was observed until 9:10 or so. It vocalized once when approached by a flicker, with several harsh ""char"" calls. When we returned for lunch, it had been replaced at the sap well by a Red-breasted Sapsucker, and has not been relocated as of Dec. 19. The bird had a black back and mantle with a white wing patch that was sometimes clearly visible, other times obscured. The folded flight feathers showed some white markings, The rump was white, and the tail was solid black with no barring. The breast was black. The sides were black and white barred; the feathers were fluffed, hiding the belly. We saw flashes of yellow belly when the bird flew. The head was black, with a white eyeline that extended back to the nape; the white eyelines did not meet in back. A white mustache extended down from the base of the bill to the cheeks where it flared somewhat, not reaching the eyeline. The throat was black with a triangular patch of bright red which showed when the bird turned its head sideways to drill."
